Day 8: Reindeer
Well, it had to happen eventually, but I forgot yesterday's window, so let's have a quick game of catch-up.
This day's offering is NOT a musical instrument! Nor does it have ANYTHING to do with music! Therefore, I already love it! ...So let's talk about it.
Just like the last Minions calendar with the Penguin and the Elephant, we're given a tiny miniset meant to build a small animal. In this case, a reindeer.
Surprisingly, NOT the same reindeer we saw in the last calendar, so I'm glad they're not just reusing designs!
...And this isn't just any reindeer, but one with a red, shiny nose!
That's right! It's the return of Drunky, The OTHER Red-Nosed Reindeer! As he broke his neck and died of liver failure in his first Christmas special, this one has him navigating Purgatory as a non-anthropomorphic animal. In an attempt to redeem himself, he tries to cross over to the physical world and appear to alcoholics to plead with them to stop drinking, as part of his redemption. ...Unfortunately, he's ignored by everyone he tries to talk to, because he's no stranger than anything else they've seen, and he's eventually shot and eaten by the equally lost Charlton Heston, double-killing him for good! Fun for the whole family!
As with the Penguin and Elephant, I'm impressed with how they managed to pull off a recognizable reindeer model using so few pieces, and they do an impressive job with the few pieces they have! I especially like the claw pieces used as antlers, and the cute little tail on the back! It's these additions that keep the model from being too generic, since you'd need outside-the-box thinking to think to add these! ...As well as many different types and colors of bricks.
Overall, it's a nice model. Simple, crude, and ambiguous if it's a toy or there's an actual reindeer running around, but it's cute and fits the aesthetics. And it's NOT an instrument! ...And that will be the final time I bring up instruments. Let's judge all future models on their own merit, and not by how much they resemble a guitar. Besides, now that we're done with music, every day is a surprise! Let's see what surprise the next door gives us!
