Day 21: Gingerbread Monster & Nutcracker
Today, we have not one, but TWO things to look at! A Gingerbread Monster and a weird Nutcracker/Tin Solider toy! ...Why?
So, we've gone from basically a repeating pattern of figure, accessories, skis, recliner, presents, to just getting the three similar items all at once, to getting two completely different items at once! ...Did they build all the models, realize at the last minute most of the spaces were going to be taken up by different variations of the exact same furniture and accessories, and just merge what was supposed to be two separate doors into one? ...Why is Mega Bloks' reasoning more random than most knockoff third-party brick companies I've spotlighted?
Anyway, let's first look at the Gingerbread Monster.
Which some of you might recognize as the exact same build as last year's Gingerbread Man. Bricks, colors and all!
Right down to the sprue holes on the back! ...I'm just going to assume they were produced around the exact same time or used bricks from the exact same mold, so this shouldn't really shock anyone.
Of course, in following the theme of this calendar, they've taken a more morbid turn with the paint job. Instead of the large smile and rosy-red cheeks of the original, this one has had one of its eyes put out and its mouth sewn shut! ...I REALLY hope that, in universe, that's just frosting and it was originally made like this, because the alternative makes Patrick Bateman look sane and gentle as a kitten...
Its heart has even been ripped out of its chest and is bleeding down his abdomen... I swear this series that's supposed to be a friendly, slightly parodical take on the classic monster universe gets darker with every other door I open...
So let's leave Gingerdead Man to his everlasting torment and instead look at their Nutcracker/Tin Man interpretation. ...Or is it actually one of those stick people they found in The Blair Witch, dressed up for Christmas? Either way wouldn't surprise me at this point...
This is just about the loosest approximation to whatever they were shooting for you could imagine. The arms are those little pole-things Mega Bloks likes to include in their sets, the head is a group of single-stud pieces stacked on top of one another, and the legs and hat are literally the same cylinder pieces colored differently. Honestly, it looks more like something you'd find in the basement of an obsessed stalker. Or a voodoo doll. ...It's probably a voodoo doll...
The only things that clue me in that this is supposed to be a soldier doll of some sort are the colors and the button pattern on what's supposed to be the chest. ...Which even that, they messed up slightly, as the pattern is annoyingly tilted and off-center. The whole thing almost looks like a last-minute addition, like they were just going to include the Gingerbread Monster for that scene, but somebody really quickly drew up and threw another design into the pile and they just rolled with it 5 minutes before they were supposed to turn in the box artwork...
And if this IS supposed to be a Nutcracker in the monster world... I REALLY don't want to know what definition of "nuts" they crack with it...
So that's the Gingerdead Monster/Voodoo-Cracker combination. ...And if this is how they interpret "original ideas", I think I see why so much of the calendar was repeated... They're not terrible, but they feel last-minute, like it just wasn't "Christmassy" enough, so they quickly put together some toys from a bin of random bricks, and sorted out the colors and patterns later. So if you've ever wanted to see what their take on Tuesday Addams' toys are, then strange, bizarre, quite morbid wish granted...
